Quezon City General Hospital

The Department of Otorhinolaryngology Head & Neck
Surgery of the Quezon City General Hospital is a fully accredited training institution as approved by the Philippine
Board of Otolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery. It started its formal training program in January 2000. The Department
since then has grown tremendously in terms of personnel, equipment and surgical capabilities.
The Department is
generally recognized as a competent and continually growing specialty among the residents of Quezon City and the surrounding
provinces of Bulacan, Pampanga, Nueva Ecija, and as far as provinces of Northern Luzon.
The department staff manned
the different hospital area such as the out-patient department (OPD), the Operating Room (OR), the Emergency Room (ER), the
ward and Audiological lab. A resident goes on a 24-hr duty to respond to calls from the wards and the ER. The residents are
also made available to do or assist surgeries and other procedures done at the specialty laboratories.
The Otorhinolaryngology-Head
and Neck Surgery Out-Patient Department is manned during office hours from Monday to Friday by the resident staff under the
guidance of the consultant assigned for the day. It is conveniently located at the newly constructed OPD-complex, where all
the other training specialties hold clinic.
The Department has an office located at Trauma Ward at the 2nd floor
of the main hospital building. The office houses the audiometry booth, the library of different Ear Nose Throat textbooks,
manuals and journals, which the residents and consultants use for reference. The resident staff has their daily ward (service
and pay) dressing and endorsement rounds everyday together with the consultant for the day.
The Emergency Room
of the Quezon City General Hospital has been well furnished with regards to managing Ear Nose and Throat trauma patients.
With this, we are capable of addressing different levels of Ear Nose and Throat patient conditions, from the mildly emergent
to life threatening situations.
Quezon City General Hospital has 3 fully operational surgical suites. Each room
is equipped with functional instrumentation for major and minor procedures. As for the specialized Ear, Nose and Throat procedures,
the department has been updating instrumentation for otology, rhinopharyngology and laryngeal surgeries.
The dynamism
of our department may well be exhibited by the postgraduate, grand rounds and various activities we have sponsored. The resident
staff are also active in attending courses offered by the different accredited Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery institutions
for further training and improvement of skills such as temporal bone dissection, sinus surgery and head and neck reconstruction
courses.
In terms of research, we redirect the departments thrust to objectively formulate and pursue research
projects to produce relevant papers as part of our training and development.
In pursuit of academic excellence,
the department conducts weekly pre-operative conferences on all service cases scheduled for operation. Grand rounds are also
held for cases requiring inputs from the consultant staff. Journal reports and medical therapeutic lectures are also being
conducted to consistently review the residents on practice theories.
With the promised support from the hospital
director, Dr. Edgardo de Villa Salud and the present administration headed by The Honorable Mayor of Quezon City, Feliciano
Belmonte Jr. and the City Council, the department hopefully will grow and cope up with the progress in technology for a better
service delivery for the indigent patients, particularly in Quezon City.
